One book had Fire, one had Thunder, ect ect. They were limited to Books that they carried. Also - Mages were never limited to one element. You take all the fun and exploration out of it by saying "It can probably just be XXXX class, okay, done!" instead of actually building something. Half the point of this was asking "How" not "What Class" by the way. Skills can be learned when a character reaches a specific level in their current.
